There are many Gout treatments out there, but really I wish I had learnt more about preventing Gout. Gout is an absolutely disgusting and embarrassing thing to have. When I told some family members that I had Gout, many of them laughed thinking it was a joke. I never really thought about Gout until I got it myself.
It used to seem to me to be something of the olden days and not something people really got any more! In my head I imagined sailors and statesmen of the 17th century getting Gout, not slightly overweight, middle aged men in the 21st century! Gout to me seems such a random and alien thing, even though I had it myself. When I was first diagnosed I was shocked. As I said previously, I related such a thing back to olden times, not to modern day circumstances.
However, the doctor explained that it is a lot more common than people expect it to be. If you really think about the people who used to get Gout, it explains why it was associated with kings and other rich people. If you compare their eating and lifestyle to ours today, you can see why, actually, many modern day overweight people have more in common with people from such times than you actually think.
It is the lack of diet and exercise that are really the key factors in why people get Gout and it was certainly a mix of both for me. While I have always been slightly overweight, I never really considered myself to be particularly unhealthy compared to many other people you see on the streets or on television. The problem was, I had got so used to looking the way I looked, I didn’t realise just how overweight I was getting. I was just accepting it. I was eating luscious, rich tasting foods and filling myself up with good wine and spirits. In my head, eating good foods was a good enough way to keep reasonably healthy as at least I was avoiding additives and E numbers.
The problem was, however, that I was eating far too much of these good foods! Not only that but I hardly ever did any exercise, unless fishing counts! I really wish I had learnt how to prevent Gout from the start. If only I had eaten healthier foods and kept in shape, I may never have gotten Gout. As it is, I did and it really taught me a lesson. Luckily, I was able to treat my Gout through the doctor and eventually the pain and swelling subsided. I am so glad I managed to get rid of the pain thanks to all the Gout treatments my doctor told me about.
